The first stage of researching the new emigration destination has begun.

I've created a spreadsheet of:
  1. EU States (rules around work visas and permits are much more relaxed as I'm from an EU State);
  2. British Overseas Territories (I'm hoping that because of a connection to Britain, works visas will be easier, but finding-out is the next stage of research);
  3. Commonwealth countries (for the same reason as 2.);
  4. countries where English is an official language (I'm happy to learn a new language, but it will be years before I'm fluent enough to work in it);
  5. countries where English is a primary language;
  6. countries where English is an important language.
Mr MigratingFishSwim is reading the comprehensive and very useful Teaching Abroad book I mentioned in an earlier post.

We'll each create a long-list of potential countries to emigrate to, based-on my spreadsheet - and fiancé's reading. Then we'll whittle it down into a shortlist. (Can you tell we're both from scientific backgrounds?)

I'm not expecting the shortlist to be very long, so we're hoping to visit one or two potential countries, to help us decide. And as I type this, I realise it would be sensible to see if fiancé can get a job interview or two arranged for the visit. (I'm self-employed, so things are different for me.)

If you're currently researching emigrating and my spreadsheet would be helpful, I'd be happy to share it with you. Email me: accurate at easy dot com. By the way, I've removed many of the cold countries, so if you want the full lists, just go to Wikipedia, which is where I got my information from, I started with Countries with English as an Official Language and you'll find other relevant links at the bottom of the page.

We emigrated to New Zealand in 2005, the good weather, education system and the 100% Pure, pollution free countryside all sounded so much better than the UK!
Well the weather is good, the schooling is good if you find a school without the racial friction caused by the Maori politicians winding up the children!
BUT the 100% Pure, Pollution FREE thing in NZ is an UTTER LIE! NZ is wildly polluted, our house in the Bay of Islands is beautiful, the land we have discovered was used by the NZ Government in the 1960's as a dump for Toxic Waste, DDT, Dieldrin, Lindane, then cleared a few years later using massive amounts of 2,4,5-T which was used more heavily in NZ than the US army used it in Vietnam as part of Agent Orange!
We are all seriously ill, the house is unsaleable and our business, a luxury lodge has closed, nobody wanted Dioxin on their Corn Flakes, can't think why!
The good news is that the Government are set up to deal with the situation, WE have to pay for experts to prove the land is contaminated and then WE have to pay to have the mess cleaned up, great when it was the Government who put the mess there in the first place!
See our website www.dioxin-nz.com and blog for more details - NZ is great but 100% Deadly!

Chris - I am so, so sad to hear of your family's experience.

My Mum had something similar and she's been ill for ages.

I wish you all a successful resolution & to recover ASAP.

Re the Maoris: racial tension is a complex issue, but IMHO, often has its starting point in oppression by white people.

Two Brits stop merely talking and get on with it.
